Milton Road update: August 2024

Published 02 September 2024

The Milton Road project aims to improve public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure to make these sustainable travel options a more attractive alternative to the car.

The scheme is very nearly complete, and many more sections are due to be finished in September.

The majority of works on the entire project will be complete by the end of September, with just a few final works left to be carried out in October.

Overnight works

Milton Road August update - overnight works

We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we carried out the latest overnight works.

The night time works we undertook in late July and August are finished, with the carriageway, and associated side roads, being surfaced and partially lined. Although we were able to make good progress with the lining, we’ll be revisiting to finalise the remaining sections shortly.

King’s Hedges junction

The King’s Hedges junction is almost complete with a few remaining works to be finished next month. As the works in this area come to a close, we are now in a position to shortly switch on the permanent traffic signals and will therefore need to remove the temporary signals.

While we are switching over to the permanent lights on Thursday 5 September, traffic levels may be a little higher, so we recommend you allow extra time for any journeys through this junction. To minimise the impact these works will have, we will aim to avoid the morning and evening peak hours.

While all four quadrants are now open, there is a small section of footway, next to the wall outside the Golden Hind pub, which will need to be finalised in the next surfacing visit.

Landscaping will be taking place in early September for the Junction, which will see the addition of trees and wildflowers.

Upcoming overnight works

Across two nights, Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 September, we will remove the signals and complete the white lining markings in the King’s Hedges area. The junction will remain fully open.

You may experience some noise while these works take place, but this should be kept to a minimum. Please note that lining works in particular are weather dependant, so it is possible we may need to re-schedule at short notice.

Thanking our community

Milton Road August update - Community

Given that works are almost near completion on the project, we’d like to thank the Milton Road community for their patience and understanding whilst we carry out these works.

We’re very grateful for everyone’s input on the scheme: your feedback and insight since the project’s very beginning, to now being largely delivered, is very much appreciated. Thank you for the contributions you have made.

We hope residents are already benefiting from easier walks on our new Copenhagen crossings, quicker journeys on our new segregated cycle and walking paths, and safer experiences using our improved junctions. Further sections will be opened soon to provide greater connectivity from your home to wherever you’re heading.

The Elizabeth Way / Highworth Avenue roundabout is an excellent example of how the local community worked with us to create a beautiful landscape that the community can be proud of.

Copenhagen crossings

The Copenhagen crossings at George Street are complete. Some works in the area surrounding the crossing still need to be finalised, but the crossing is open and ready for use.

Milton Road August update - Rain garden at Woodhead Drive

A final crossing at Woodhead Drive is still under construction but will be finished when works on the project are completed. We’re currently undertaking a variety of works such as installing road kerbs and making room for a new rain garden.

In September, we’ll be returning to the Hurst Park Avenue crossing to undertake road surfacing and landscaping.

Lovell Road

Milton Road August update - Fraser Road

On Lovell Road, the section between the Golden Hind pub to the Kia garage is now open.

Fraser Road to the Milton Arms - east

Drainage and subsequent surfacing have been installed in this section, with all works between Fraser Road to Downham’s Lane now complete.

Works are progressing well between Downham’s Lane to the Milton Arms. This area is still under construction and will be finalised in September.

Elizabeth Way / Highworth Avenue roundabout

Milton Road August update - Roundabout

The roundabout’s traffic lights are due to be switched on in late September.

Ascham Road to Hurst Park Avenue

We’ve tarmacked the section between the south side of Ascham Road up to St Lawrence’s Church, which is now open for use. We’ll be revisiting a small section of this stretch when we next lay tarmac from the church to Hurst Park Avenue.

Bus stop update

‘Bus stop suspended’ signage will always be displayed with a notice of the new temporary location. Information boards and service provider websites will also display information.
