Newmarket Road - Granta Park

A new shared use pathway and crossing, as well as safety improvements at the Granta Park roundabout, have been delivered by the Greater Cambridge Partnership as part of the Linton Greenway project.

The work along Newmarket Road in Little Abington was completed in just over four months for the 1,500 residents of the village to have better and safer journeys along the road to the Granta Park roundabout to east of Bourn Bridge Road.

Martin Meehan, GCP Project manager, said: “The new pathway significantly improves the ability for people to walk and cycle along Newmarket Road in Abington, providing a much safer and better link for Granta Park employees and Abington residents. When we started this project, we knew this area was key – we heard from residents and the local community how important giving them a path which they felt was safe and gave them choice in how they wanted to travel. While I am really proud of what we have done so far, there is still work to do as we deliver a new shared path linking Granta Park and Hildersham as well upgrading the footbridge over the A11.”

As part of the project, drainage was replaced to ensure carriageway drainage is efficient and additional landscaping was created to make sure the new pathway and surroundings is safe.

The route has also been future proofed for street lighting and fibre ducting has been installed in partnership with Connecting Cambridgeshire as part of Cambridgeshire County Council’s ‘Dig Once’ policy.

A new shared use pathway linking Granta Park to Hildersham will be delivered during the next phase of work, as well as upgrading the footbridge links over the A11 as part of the wider Cambridge South East Transport phase 1 project.
