Horningsea Greenway – Horningsea Village and Fen Ditton
What’s been done in February?
✅ All streetlight head replacements are now complete in both villages.
✅ Horningsea now has new lighting columns in place.
✅ In Fen Ditton, we’ve just finished installing high-friction surfacing to improve road safety.
What’s coming in March?
Fen Ditton: We’ve been out on the street with local stakeholders to confirm the best locations for two new street light columns.
Horningsea: A few finishing touches remain, including line marking, removing outdated signage, and installing bollards. These will be done by the end of March once the materials arrive. To ensure these works can be completed safely, traffic management will be in place. We’ll do our best to keep any disruption to a minimum and we appreciate your patience.
Waterbeach Greenway – Cowley Road

What’s been done in February?
✅ The installation of cycleway kerbs is nearly complete across the scheme.
✅ Drainage works are ongoing, and verges are being topped with soil.
✅ UK Power Networks, City Fibre, and Virgin Media have all finished their diversion works.
✅ The tarmac base layer has been laid in several areas for the footway and cycleway, and footway construction has started from the southern end up to the Mick George junction.
✅ Work is in progress across the Mick George junction, with the north side now complete.
✅ All ducting has been installed in preparation for new streetlighting.

What’s coming in March?
From Monday 3 March, night shifts will take place for three weeks to complete key works near the Mick George junction and towards the Cowley Road bend near Milton Road. The road will remain open, but some traffic management will be in place. We appreciate your patience as we work towards completing all works at Cowley Road.
TROs for Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth, Stapleford and Granham’s Road
New Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) for proposed highway improvements on a range of greenways will soon go live.
- For the Melbourn Greenway this includes: Meldreth and Melbourn villages and Shepreth.
- For Sawston Greenway, this will include Great Shelford and Stapleford villages and Granham’s Road.
TROs are legal documents that regulate how parking, traffic movement and highway obstructions are managed on the public highways and include changes to yellow lines, speed limits and traffic calming.
Once advertised, anyone can make a representation to Cambridgeshire County Council, who are the highways authority, about the proposals and your feedback will be considered when a decision is reached.
The TROs will be published on 3 March 2025 and will be open to public response for 21 days, deadline being midnight on 23 March 2025. To review feedback on the TRO proposals, please go to the Cambridgeshire County Council webpage here: https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-and-parking/roads-and-pathways/traffic-regulation-orders/permanent-traffic-regulation-orders
For further assistance on viewing the TRO please email: policyandregulation@cambridgeshire.gov.uk
Plans for the Melbourn and Sawston Greenway sections subject to TRO can be found on the Greater Cambridge Partnership website: https://www.greatercambridge.org.uk
Safety improvements in Barton village this spring
We are bringing forward a range of improvements within Barton village to create a safer, more pedestrian-friendly environment. Here’s a look ahead to the improvements being planned as part of Barton Greenway, which will particularly benefit children travelling to Barton Primary School.
- Installation of three raised tables to slow vehicle speeds and improve accessibility when crossing the road
- A new 20mph speed limit throughout the village
- Speed cushions along New Road and Comberton Road to bring speeds in line with the new speed limit
- Installation of a zebra crossing on New Road to enable safer journeys to and from Barton Primary School
These improvements are in line with similar works completed in Comberton village as part of Comberton Greenway, which have made it safer for people to move around the local area.
A better bridge for Burrell’s Walk and new alignment on the Fulbourn Greenway
People using Burrell’s Walk (part of the Comberton Greenway) and the Fulbourn Greenway to get into the city will be able to do so more quickly, if agreed by the GCP’s Executive Board.

A new bridge on Burrell’s Walk
Burrell’s Walk is a busy thoroughfare for pedestrians and cyclists linking the centre of Cambridge to the University Library and Cambridge West. Around 2,500 cyclists use the route every day, but the current bridge over Bin Brook is very narrow, measuring only 1.7m wide inside the handrails. This lack of space means it’s difficult for pedestrians and cyclists to safely pass each other.
It is an issue highlighted by local community groups and councillors, so we are proposing to include it as part of the Comberton Greenway which already comes to the end of Adams Road. Our proposal would involve constructing a new, widened bridge over Bin Brook to facilitate easier, safer passage along Burrell’s Walk for pedestrians and cyclists.

New alignment for the final section of the Fulbourn Greenway
We are also proposing changes to the final section (phase 3) of the Fulbourn Greenway as it comes into the city. The current proposal uses the active travel network, but isn’t direct, has several pinch points between residential properties, and would require the purchase of private land.
This section was originally designed before the implementation of the Mill Road bridge bus gate – so had been discounted due to high levels of through traffic. The new proposals will seek to develop a new alignment using part of Mill Road, which is more direct and will no longer be congested due to the bus gate.
