GW comberton

Safer travel for Comberton, Hardwick, Coton and Cambridge.

Safer walking, wheeling and cycling between Cambridge and the western villages of Comberton, Hardwick, Coton.

The greenway will make it safer and easier to reach Cambridge University West Campus, the Sidgwick site and Newnham. As well as better access to Comberton Village College and Long Road Sixth Form.

Where we are

The Comberton Greenway will be discussed at our Executive Board on Wednesday 19 March 2025. The board will consider recommendations to include the construction of a new, widened bridge along Burrell’s Walk as part of the greenway.

We’ve completed the early works programme along this greenway which has made school runs safer and easier, helped blind and partially sighted people navigate road crossings by the installation of ‘tactile paving’ and improved visibility as well as personal safety by renewing lighting.

This year we are concentrating on our work in Coton and along Adams Road.

Work in these areas will improve junctions, introduce traffic-calming measures and add new planting to improve rainwater absorption. You may see our teams on Adams Road in April conducting utility and drainage surveys, as well as ground investigations, ahead of construction beginning later in the spring to ensure a seamless transition and reduce delays.

How we got here

We first consulted on the route spring 2019 with further engagement on our updated plans in summer 2022. Our decision-makers on the Executive Board agreed to proceed in December 2022 with some changes in response. These are summarised in the You Said We Did report.

Route Overview

Starting in Comberton, the route heads north on Long Road and continues towards Coton. It then goes over the M11 bridge and carries on past the Cambridge University West Campus. A new link branches off towards Barton Road before the path continues along Adams Road, Grange Road, Sidgwick Avenue and before reaching Silver Street.
